Used commercially in air fresheners and insecticides. Historically, the flower spikes were used for medicinal purposes and as an insect repellent. Dark purple (or sometimes pink) flowers bloom from late spring to early summer and are uniquely shaped like little pineapples with colorful "rabbit ears" (sterile bracts) protruding from the tops. Can be used as an annual garden plant or grown in containers and overwintered indoors in a cool, dry, bright environment - avoid overwatering. 1.5-2'H x 1.5-2'W. USDA Zones 8-11.
